ELA Academic Intervention Services
Mission Statement:
To provide instruction and support for the purpose of improving students’ academic achievement in all areas that require skills of reading and writing.
Instruction:
The Reading Process Skills
- Vocabulary: prefixes, suffixes, roots, use of context and visual clues
- Comprehension: main idea, significant details, sequence, fact vs. opinion, questioning, visualization, compare/contrast, inference, figurative language, genre, author’s purpose, author’s style, point of view
- Literary Elements: plot, conflict, setting, mood/tone, character development, theme, point of view
- Active Reading: Interacting with the text, thinking about the reading, discussing texts, annotating the text, questioning the text, making text connections, summarizing, synthesizing, clarifying meaning, accessing background knowledge, establishing a purpose for reading
The Writing Process Skills:
- Prewriting strategies: idea-finding, gathering information, organizing ideas, planning, analyzing a prompt
- Drafting: narrowing a topic, determining audience, setting purpose, organization of ideas, including supporting detail
- Revision: adding evidence, examples, elaboration, expanding sentences, improving introductions and conclusions, utilizing transitions, fine-tuning word choice, clarifying meaning
- Proofreading: self-editing strategies for correcting grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, paragraphing
- Publishing: presenting a neat, legible, finished product
- Written Response: responding to texts, speeches, and videos through notes, essays, paragraphs or journals for the purpose of extracting and expressing deeper meaning.
Practice and Support:
- Frequent, daily opportunities to practice writing and reading strategies
- Short, focused mini-lessons and reading/writing assignments
- Teacher-student and student-student conferencing for improved performance
- Discussion of independent reading selections as well as assistance in appropriately selecting independent reading material
- Reading a balance of informational and literary text in increasing complexity

A Message from Mrs. Peterson!
Welcome!
My name is Mrs. Peterson, and I am currently working with the 5th and 6th grade students this year at Pawling Central School District. I am looking forward to working with you as a partner in educating your child. My goal is to facilitate learning in an exciting and fun way. As an educator, it is my job to see that your child becomes a lifelong learner. To achieve this, it is essential that we work together to ensure that your child is working to his or her potential in a successful and meaningful way. Keeping this in mind, we are certain to achieve success in educating your child. I look forward to being your partner in this process.

Introducing The Punies, an eclectic group of neighborhood friends who play sports and take on adventures together. Created by NBA Champion Kobe Bryant and featuring original songs and an unforgettable cast of characters known as The Good Ol’ Gang, each episode shares important life lessons on how to play with joy and limitless imagination, the way sports should be played.
Classic Children's fairy tales, presented as audio dramas, performed by kids, for kids. Including stories from Hans Christian Anderson, the Grimm Brothers, Greek myths, African folk tales and more.
Storynory is the first and most loved story podcast. We've been around since 2005 and kids have grown up with us. We are both educational and entertaining. We offer a mixture of original stories and myths from around the world.
Big Life Kids podcast teaches children to stay resilient, believe in themselves, and face life's challenges with confidence for kids ages 5 to 10.
The place where young readers meet to talk about books. The show includes a celebrity reader and an interview with the author.

Students can access BrainPop using the district website. Visit the Middle School website, click on Library Media Center, and go to ‘24/7 Research Databases' to log in to BrainPop and any other educational site using the school’s login credentials.
