Renaissance Web quest A Web Quest for 7th Grade Social Studies Designed by James F. Kolessar Kolessarj@PawlingSchools.org Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits | Teacher Page Introduction You are a Middle School Student living in Pawling in 2009. As you are riding your bike to school you have an accident. When you wake up, you find yourself in a small peasant’s cottage in rural England, at the beginning of the Renaissance. Most of the people around you cannot read or write. They have lived in the same place their entire lives and more than likely are going to be doing the same job their parents have done. Into this way of life are coming thinkers, inventors, artists, sculptors and teachers, who are beginning to challenge their way of life. All of a sudden “new technology”, new ways of living, and thinking, are popping up all over the place. For example, people are being given the opportunity to learn how to read and write which will change their way of life. They are marveling at how a new cathedral reaches toward the sky and is filled with large stained glass windows, due to improvements in architectural engineering. Today we live in a world where “new technology” changes almost daily, thanks to people who have been influenced by those who lived during the Renaissance. Imagine what would have happened if the inventors, thinkers and artists of the Renaissance had been suppressed by the people in charge? Your task is to get back to the present by meeting, talking too and writing about some famous people, inventions, and theories of the Renaissance. Question: Why do we consider the Renaissance to be one of the most influential time periods in our history? The Task - Create a timeline, listing 12 forms of “new technology” during the Renaissance.
- Create a map of Europe, showing the towns/places and the names of the inventors/creators of the 12 forms of “new technology” from the last task.
- Interview a famous person from the Renaissance.
- Explain how “new technology” will help you find your way home.
- Describe life in Europe between 1350 and 1550, has affected your life today.
- Compare and contrast the “new technology” of the Renaissance with the “new technology” of today.
- Create a poster explaining which inventions of the Renaissance had the most impact on your life?
- Explain why we consider the Renaissance to be one of the most influential time periods in our history.
